Non-motorized transportation also refereed as active transportation (mainly cycling and walking) have attracted a lot of attention in the last years. Several benefits have been attributed to active modes at the individual and society level; however, important issues still persist when promoting active transportation such as traffic safety, lack of facilities and appropriate designs, air pollution, etc. In this context, there has been a growing interest in the development of data collection and monitoring technologies and methods in research and practice. Data is essential to investigate impacts of new infrastructure and programs, to monitor the evolution or growth in a corridor or region, to evaluate and monitor injury risk, etc. Among the data needs, one can mention counts or volumes in a city network or a set of locations (such as intersections, sidewalks, bike paths, public spaces, terminals, etc.). Data needs also include speeds or travel times, space-time trajectories, route data, O-D matrices, number of visits, and injury risk measures when interacting with motorized road users. The objective of this work is to present the recent research developments in automatic data collection, monitoring and modeling tools and their applications in urban planning and traffic safety.
