Transport Planning: Not just getting from A to B
Conférence présentée par Owen Waygood, professeur à l’ÉSAD.
Transportation planning is interesting. It really is. Transportation affects our entire life: where we live; how we conduct daily activities; how and where we interact with others. It has environmental, social, and economic impacts on personal, community, society, and global levels. There’s something for everyone, and everyone might plan something different.
How we approach transportation planning is, I believe, fundamentally rooted in culture. What do we value? What do we ignore? What are the results of those values and resulting assumptions? Is it what we hope to achieve, or is it lacking?
If the results of our transportation planning are found lacking, how might we change things? There are short-term changes such as how we behave within the existing system, and longer-term changes such as altering the built environment. In both cases, examining not only travel behavior within our own cultural context, but behaviour abroad could help in identifying failures and successes.
In this presentation, I will give examples of differences in transportation across cultures; introduce the integrated behavioural model from health research; and highlight a few emerging concepts in transportation that I at least find extremely interesting.
